The M.F.A. program in Digital Media & Design provides advanced creative and research opportunities in various specializations.

Applicants for the M.F.A. degree must first meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School as specified in the Graduate Catalog.

Graduate Assistantships: Fully funded graduate assistantships are available, including tuition remission, a stipend, and health insurance. See who’s currently in our M.F.A..

Application Deadline (Fall 2025):

  • January 11, 2025 (No spring admissions),
  • Completed applications and portfolio submissions must be received by January 11, 2025 to be considered for funding for a Fall 2025 start.

Portfolio Submission Steps

1. The Application


Apply to the Graduate School: Complete the online application, including:

Create a 1-minute video using a smartphone or webcam telling us your personal story of engagement with and passion for Digital Media and Design.

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement of purpose detailing why you want to attend this particular program, which faculty you would want to work with, and how you see the program furthering your creative and/or career goals.
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate level studies mailed to UConn from the providing institution
  • International students: Evidence of English language proficiency using results from one of the standardized tests accepted by the Graduate School. Further English proficiency is required to TA or teach as an Instructor of Record at the University.
  • Submit Your Portfolio: Upload your portfolio through SlideRoom.

2. The M.F.A. Portfolio


Artistic Portfolio (Creative Work Samples):

Showcase your readiness for advanced creative activity and research in your chosen specialization (3D Animation, Digital Culture, Digital Film/Video Production, Digital Media Business Strategies, Game Design, Motion Design & Animation, or Web/Interactive Media Design).

  • Include a creative research/artist statement (500 words).
  • Provide 10-15 examples of work (videos, images, audio, website links).
  • Provide captions for each work: Title, Medium, Description (including your role in collaborative projects).
  • File size limits: Images (10MB), Video (500MB), Audio (60MB), PDFs (20MB), Models/Other (20MB). Links to YouTube, Vimeo, and SoundCloud are also accepted.

Additional Information

Applicants to the DMD graduate program are not required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) or the GMAT (Graduate Miller Analogies Test).

Virtual Interview: Finalists will be contacted for a virtual interview.
